Biogen had acquired multiple Anaerobic Digestion (AD) plants from varying developers over a number of years. Biogen understood that the developers of the AD plants had a lacking approach when it came to lightning risk of the assets.
We were scoped to carry out a detailed series of Lightning Protection Risk Assessment and designs to BS EN 62305 across 14no sites in the UK. The provision of a risk assessment tailored to each site meant that a bespoke design solution using the “rolling sphere” methodology (RSM) that could be matched to suit each site’s particular requirements - with consideration to parameters such as site operation, ATEX, location, local risks and environmental measures all captured to offer a design report, CAD layouts and technical scope of works to be used for and by the installation contractor.
As part of our design work, our specialist team built 3D wireframe models of the assets and explosive atmospheres and developed a lightning protection design that fully met the requirements of BS EN 62305 and DSEAR. We worked with the client to develop lightning protection arrangements that were fully buildable based on the on-site conditions identified by the field surveys. The output included a full suite of CAD drawings and tender specifications, enabling the client to go out to the market with a fully costed design.
After successfully delivering the scope, client Biogen is enjoying the peace of mind that comes knowing that their fleet of previously diverse sites are all technically secure from the risk of lightning in an ATEX environment, compliant with the latest best practice, applying the latest standards relying on our technical expertise.
